I vaguely remember playing Doodle God a while back; you would mix elements like earth and fire to create more and more elements. The concept worked because there is plenty you can make using your imagination and a few basic items and the 'goal' of the game to finding all possible combinations felt okay. Now with Doodle Tanks, you have to fumble around aimlessly with tank parts, engineers and other doodads, making matches that don't make sense, basically trial-and-error-ing the whole thing.
And that's basically my issue about this game; tank history is complex and could be very interesting, but as it is, you just mix random things together with no idea what the result could be. It starts easy, but after a very short while you just hit a wall of logical matches. The game could be much better if they only told you which elements you've already tried with which other one. If they told you the elements that you could still use to make things with, give hints. Because the goal of the game is to make all of the things, they should encourage you to do so.
But no, all of these basic features for a 'doodle' game are sold piecemeal and you can only buy a pack of them, it's not like if you unlocked that feature forever. It's the only way Doodle Tanks could be 'fun' with help to guide you into making new matches. You've been stuck for a minute or so matching the same 5 things together without finding the right mix? Why not point one of the matches automatically, or redden the ones you can't use right now? Oh wait, I know why, to try and make money.
