Castle DoomBad is a tower defense game where heroes infiltrate your towers via the main door and windows to try and rescue a princess to bring her out of the building. Your job is to build traps and summon minions to kill the heroes before they reach her glass cage. Yes, there are two currencies and one is more premium than the other one, but I never even felt the specter of microtransactions ruin my fun.
Let’s start with the annoying first, I don’t like how the game pops large error messages when you try to do things you can’t, like build at the top of a ladder, or try to build two things at the same place, the first time it’s fine, but just buzz with a red X and that’ll be fine, no need to clutter the screen and block some gamespace with that. Also I would’ve loved for the scream generators (traps you build that just generate more currency to build more traps) to do so automatically instead of popping little icons I have to tap, but that’s fine.
The power-ups are useful when you’re in trouble, and you can buy them with the premium currency at reasonable rates. You get some of that currency by accomplishing missions such as burning 10 enemies or finishing a level only with ceiling traps. They’re fun to try as they change the way you normally tackle a stage. I wouldn’t recommend trying the missions on the hardest map you’re at if you want to get a perfect rating (and a crown) because if the princess gets captured, you won’t get it. I didn’t use the power ups much because since they’re so available, they could kinda make the game too easy. But that’s fine, usually it’s the other way around.
And the normal traps are upgraded with coins you get after each level, and the rate you get them is fair. Traps do all kinds of things as you upgrade them, from adding critical hit chances to giving them armor against attacks. Minions also have these properties, but they move around and are better at delaying enemies than most traps are. On the other side, the enemies come in varying strengths with fodder knights falling down easily and the crazed soldiers with machine guns that will just rip through your defenses like butter. I enjoyed Castle DoomBad, it was a fun defense game.
